The corporate elite and government merge. The oligarchy of high-end financial investors has no nationality other than investment opportunities. These elites have become the Olympian gods of malevolence neighboring on iniquity. The professional economists, top government advisers, and corporate executives are their highly paid prostitutes. The rest of us universal drones become the ground meat that feeds the beast. We are divided by nationality, ethnic and religious affiliation. The current anti-capitalist movements are movements that attack the global corporate bureaucracy directly. Democracy is not democratic unless it is egalitarian, participatory, placing the economy under direct control of all the people through their communities, meeting real peoples’ needs and not profits for the already excessively glutted and wealthy.
Investors vs. the needy this is what is at stake in this movement. Production for use for all the people, especially the poor, as opposed to, assuring the large global investors a chance for profits. Greed on one side and social moral values on the other would mean either an ethical community with social responsibility and a concern for everyone or an economy motivated by profitable opportunities for the few.
Before us now is a great cause. We must fulfill our destiny or betray our opportunity. The current struggle against neo-liberal economic policies is what defines this historical setting. Like struggles of the past the experiences we are living through will define the political awareness for the lifetime of the participants. The International is once again the source of a global patriotism. We call this humanity. Nationalism is the voice of reaction.
