America

America
The Socialist Party USA and the Industrial Workers of the World before the First World War; the Committee for Industrial Organization, renamed Congress of Industrial Organizations and the Communist Party USA during the 1930s; or the Students for a Democratic Society, the Socialist Workers Party, Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and the antiwar and the civil rights movements of the 1960s set the tone.  The United Farm Workers union from the mid-1960s until about 1980 was a continuation of all this. A revitalized Women’s Movement, Ecological Awakenings and Gays and Lesbians proudly out in the open was nurtured in these traditions. The Rainbow Coalition of the 1980’s and the protests against the World Bank, IMF and WTO in the 1990’s are part of this proud tradition.
